Town Code Highlights

Animal Control

Are dogs allowed off-leash in parks?

No. Dogs must be leashed at all times in public parks and spaces unless in designated off-leash areas.

Yes. Town code requires pet owners to immediately remove and properly dispose of pet waste in public areas. Violations may result in fines.

Building & Construction

How do I apply for a permit?

Applications must be submitted electronically. Visit islipny.gov/building-division or contact the Permits Office at (631) 224-5464.

Cosmetic updates like painting, flooring, or replacing cabinets typically don’t require a permit — but it’s always best to check with the Building Division.

You must obtain a permit before starting most construction or renovation projects. Common examples include:

  • New construction (homes, garages, sheds over 144 sq ft)
  • Additions or extensions to existing structures
  • Interior renovations (e.g., removing walls, adding bathrooms)
  • Decks, porches, and patios
  • Fences over 6 feet tall
  • Swimming pools (in-ground and above-ground)
  • Demolition of any structure
  • Roof replacements (if structural changes are involved)
  • Solar panel installations
  • Accessory structures (e.g., detached garages, gazebos)
  • Driveway expansions or new paving
  • Sign installations (for businesses)
  • Change of use or occupancy (e.g., converting a garage to living space)

Garbage & Recycling

What’s the rule for bulk item pickup?

Bulk non-metal items (e.g., furniture) are collected on your last household collection day of the week, with a limit of 3 items. Bulk metal and e-waste (e.g., appliances, electronics) are collected every Wednesday.

Garbage must be placed curbside no earlier than 6 PM the night before your scheduled pickup. Early placement may result in code violations or litter issues.

Vehicles, Parking & Registration

Are there restrictions for parking commercial vehicles on public streets?

Yes. Commercial vehicles are typically prohibited from overnight street parking in residential zones. Temporary daytime parking may be allowed for active work (e.g., contractors, deliveries), but vehicles must not obstruct traffic or driveways.

Yes, but they must follow no wake rules, be properly registered, and operated by licensed individuals.

Generally, commercial vehicles may not be parked overnight on residential property unless they are fully enclosed in a garage or meet specific zoning exceptions. This includes box trucks, vans with commercial signage, trailers, and construction vehicles.

Any vehicle used primarily for business purposes, especially those with company logos, external equipment, or oversized dimensions (e.g., dual rear wheels, ladder racks, trailers) may be classified as commercial under Town of Islip zoning codes.

Home-based businesses must comply with residential zoning laws. Parking a commercial vehicle on-site may require a special permit or variance. Contact the Town of Islip Planning Department for guidance.

Document the issue (date, time, location, vehicle description) and report it to the Town of Islip. For recurring issues, the Oakdale Civic Association can help escalate concerns to the appropriate department.

The river is a No Wake Zone — speed limit is 5 MPH. This protects wildlife, prevents erosion, and ensures safety for all boaters.

Enforcement is handled by the Town of Islip Code Enforcement Division. Residents can report violations through the town’s online portal or by calling the Code Enforcement hotline.

Waterways & Safety

Can I drive a golf cart in Oakdale?

Only if it is registered with the NYS DMV and meets all safety and equipment standards. Unregistered golf carts are not permitted on public roads.

These are not allowed on public roads, parks, or town property. Use is restricted to private land with owner permission.
