About Oakdale

The hamlet of Oakdale is situated upon two Native American trade routes, located where Montauk Highway and Sunrise Highway currently exist. The Secatogue Tribe inhabited the area known today as Oakdale. In 1683, William Nicoll purchased the land now referred to as the Town of Islip from Winne-quaheagh, Sachem of Connetquot.

The Gilded Age (1870s-1890s, roughly) played a significant role in Oakdale’s history. Oakdale is home to property and mansions formerly owned by the Vanderbilts, including Idle Hour

ABOUT THE OAKDALE CIVIC ASSOCIATION

The Oakdale Civic Association was incorporated November 8, 1989 after the owner of 127 acres of wetlands in Oakdale proposed a development of 142 houses and boat slips. Oakdale residents banded together to fight for what they believed was best for the community. This land is now a protected wetland area owned by the State of New York.
